Technische Universität München
München has four big universities:
- the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (founded 1472 in Ingolstadt, moved to München in 1826) with 40,000 students,
- the Technische Universität (founded 1868 by King Ludwig II. of Bavaria) with 20,000 students,
- the Universität der Bundeswehr (university of the German armed forces, founded in 1973), and
- the Fachhochschule München (founded 1971) with 14,000 students.
Furthermore, there are several specialized universities like the college of music, the college of art, or the college of film and television.
History of the TUM
Main building of the TUM in 1868
The name of the Technische Universität München is closely connected with the names of a lot of famous scientists like Rudolf Diesel, Claude Dornier, Carl von Linde, Wilhelm Messerschmidt, Wilhelm Nusselt, Hans Piloty, Friedrich von Thiersch, and Heinrich Wieland.
The TUM today
About 20,000 students from all over the world are currently enrolled at the TUM, one of Germany's most renowned universities for science and engineering. Its faculties of mathematics, physics, chemistry, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, architecture, informatics, life sciences, sports science, economics, and medicine are pushing back the frontier of knowledge in many areas of science.

TUM's campuses
Today, the Technische Universität München has three campuses (see also thesite maps on TUM's web portal):
- the main campus in the city is home to the faculties of civil engineering, architecture, electrical engineering, and economics;
- the campus Weihenstephan (agriculture and horticulture, brewing, food technology and dairy science, forest science) is located in the city of Freising, about 40 km northeast of München;
- the research area in Garching, about 20 km northeast of the city centre, hosts the faculties of physics, chemistry, and mechanical engineering. Since August 2002, it is also the new home of the faculties of mathematics and computer science, and therefore home to the CSE master's program, as well.
Furthermore, the university hospital "Rechts der Isar" hosts the faculty of medicine, and the faculty of sports science is located in the Olympic park.
